Workshops

New for 2018:

Tortoise Bnb and Nine Lives Vets are joining forces to deliver workshops on tortoise care. 

Workshop 1.  General Tortoise Care - Mediterranean and Russian Species.  (Hermann's, Spur Thigh, Marginated and Horsfield tortoises)

Aimed at tortoise owners/keepers and veterinary professionals who want to have a good grounding in year round tortoise care, including diet, environment and hibernation. (More info below.)

Workshop 2.  Advanced Tortoise Care - Mediterranean and Russian Species.  (Hermann's, Spur Thigh, Marginated and Horsfield tortoises.)

Aimed at veterinary professionals plus tortoise owners/keepers who have attended the General Tortoise Care workshop, this will include theory and practical sessions of handling, injecting etc.  Case studies will be presented. (More info below.)

 

Workshop 1. General Tortoise Care. Saturday 19th May 2018

By popular demand more dates to follow shortly.

Agenda:

  • Identification of Mediterranean and Russian species, their age and sex.
  • General tortoise husbandry, good health and common problems.
  • Feeding, diet and supplements.
  • Examples of outdoor enclosures and temporary indoor enclosures.
  • Hibernation versus overwintering.
  • Weed walk - identify and pick delicious, safe weeds to take home for your tortoises' tea.

The workshop will start at 10 a.m. and end about 3 -3.30 p.m. 

Lunch, tea, coffee and soft drinks are all included (and cake of course!)

The cost of the workshop is £75

Workshop 2. Advanced Tortoise Care. Saturday 9th June 2018

Agenda:

  • Case Studies to include: injuries, post hibernation anorexia, egg bound females.
  • First aid.
  • Practical session on holding & restraint and tube feeding
  • Techniques: Injections, tube feeding, calculating calorific and fluid requirements, microchipping, O-tube placement, blood sampling.
  • Overview of husbandry, feeding, diet and supliments  (For those who haven't attended the General Tortoise Care workshop 1)
  • Weed walk - identification of safe and harmful weeds.

The workshop will start at 10 a.m. and end about 3 -3.30 p.m. 

Lunch, tea, coffee and soft drinks are all included (and cake of course!)

The cost of the workshop is £75   (If you wish to attend both workshops the cost is £125.)
